New Breed of Re-enactors Bring World War Two to Life

World War Two reenactments are becoming almost as frequent as the battle demonstrations from the era of the horse and musket.

The town of Plainsview, N.Y. played host to a summertime favourite this past weekend: a historic military reenactment.

But it wasn’t a Civil War encampment that spectators were on hand to view, nor was it a skirmish from the French Indian War, 1776 or even the War of 1812.

The re-enactors in this demonstration wowed the crowd with a fully functional M3 halftrack, a restored M8 Greyhound and a working M4 Sherman tank all from the Second World War.The event was covered by the local newspaper, the Plainview Patch. With the public’s interest in World War Two at an all time high, thanks to everything from TV miniseries like the Pacific and video games like the Medal of Honor series, re-enactors dressed in authentic uniforms from the era of the Greatest Generation are becoming a big draw in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Participants at this particular demonstration appeared dressed as American GIs, but also re-enactors dressed as Soviet and Polish troops from the Second World War were on hand as well. Although none took part in this particular demonstration, other reenactment groups have formed to play the part of the Germans. In fact, World War Two reenactment societies are becoming more popular all the time.

Next weekend, the Pacific War Museum in Fredericksburg Texas will be hosting a live demonstration of U.S. weapons and tactics from the war against Japan.

The community for Second World War re-enactors is quite lively judging by this online community for them.
