THE DRONE OF piston engines, the crackle of musketry, the whiff of black powder – Summer is THE season for living history fans.

Air shows, battle reenactments, jousting tournaments and fife and drum demos make for more than just fascinating spectacles — each has a way of transporting us back through ages to experience the sights and sounds of the past in vivid detail.

This summer, MilitaryHistoryNow.com readers from around the globe will be hitting hundreds of outdoor history events. And thanks to smart phones, digital photography and social media, the entire world can now keep up with the action.

This week, we here at MHN asked our 11,000-strong Twitter audience to share some of their best shots of the season so far using the hashtag #MHNLivingHistory. Below is some of what came our way.

But remember, the #MHNLivingHistory project is a work in progress. Keep tweeting images and videos with our hashtag. We’re just getting started.
